A fine watercolor on silk landscape by Kayashima Shuzan bordered in pale green brocade with cloud designs terminating in bone rollers, enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Mountains dabbed with green rise through mist, in the foreground a solitary figure contemplates the landscape from the second floor of a cottage overlooking a lakeshore. The scroll is in excellent condition, and measures 19-1/4 by 70 inches (49 x 178 cm). Shuzan was born in Fukuoka prefecture in 1858, and studied painting under both Baisen Yoshistugu and Senshu Seki, and later came under the influence of Nakamura Tokuzan.
