Scroll: Urashima Taro

A fine, 18th or 19th century unsigned scroll, watercolor and ink on paper (full modern restoration) with brown brocade border embellished with vines extended with beige cloth. Featured is a scene from the fairy tale Urashima Taro in which the main character, Taro, rescues a turtle from marauding children, and in gratitude is taken on the turtles back to live in a great palace in the ocean. Superb detail, in both the figure and the castle reminiscent of the master Ike Taiga's Hokuga screens. This was most likely originally part of a scene on a paper door or folding screen that had been damaged. This section was saved and remounted as a scroll. The painting was in Meiji trappings when we acquired it and in turn had it remounted. There is slight staining and 1 repair to a previous break where the paper had become brittle. The scroll terminates in wooden rollers and measures 27.5 inches (70 cm) by 61 inches (155cm).
